Facebook Marketplace to be new Craigslist
It is no surprise to anyone that Facebook has been keeping an eye on classified ad heavyweights Craigslist and Ebay for some time now. In fact, a while ago, Facebook made it easy for people to set up local buy/sell/auction groups to function much like these classifieds. Today however, Facebook has made it official and launch Marketplace.
“To help people make more of these connections, today we’re introducing Marketplace, a convenient destination to discover, buy and sell items with people in your community. Marketplace makes it easy to find new things you’ll love, and find a new home for the things you’re ready to part with. We’ll continue to build new options and features to make this the best experience for people. ” Says Facebook on their site.
To launch the Marketplace, all you need to do is tap the little icon that looks like a storefront. This will bring up local items for sale. If you like something, just PM the person who listed the item and begin negotiations. Like Craigslist, Marketplace will have nothing to do with the exchange of money. But unlike Craigslist, Facebook will add a level of security that CL will be very envious of. You can view the FB profile of the person you are dealing with to see if they are in fact legit. Access to 1.4 Billion people will also have Craigslist feeling a little nervous too.
I have often complained about the over-simplicity of craigslist, and a new function like this could take away a large segment of their users. Time will tell.
