$700 Craigslist Car Worth Millions
The ad simply said:
“SERIAL # X53L on documented 1953 pre-production Corvette Frame. We believe this to be a 1953 Pontiac prototype that was to assume the name Longoria? Info received todate indicates that ZAGATO designed and PINNAFARINA constructed the body for GM in late 52. Might anyone have knowledge of some former FISHER BODY executive that could assist in further identifying this automobile?”
Would you take a chance on this? probably not. But had you did, you would be sitting in a multi-million dollar car! Sure the seats are uncomfortable, there was no engine and the paint job looked like it was done by elementary kids; but this car turns out to be the elusive missing No. 1 Cunningham Corvette! This is no ordinary corvette, it is the most sought-after rarest of corvettes. Only 3 Cunningham Corvettes were ever built on a 1960 model year C1. They were made into racecars by the legendary Briggs Cunningham. Once their racing days were over, these 3 amigos did not end up in a corvette museum, but instead were converted back in to street legal cars and sold through a dealership.
Over the years the rumors and mystery of the original 3 escalated. Eventually, 2 of the 3 cars were discovered and painstakingly restored… but those two cars were #2 and #3; not #1.
